The Front wings also had to be widened. 1 shows the wheel fitted before widening.

I split the wing along the ridge of the curve and made aluminium ribs from ½ inch angle, each rib curved to shape. The cut was chamfered to 45 degrees top and bottom so that were would be a good surface for the filler to grip: no straight cut line to open up through vibration. The two parts of the wing were then screwed to the ribs. Two layers of fibreglass were applied underneath to 1 ½ inched each side of the cut and around each rib, and one layer on top, within the cut.

Filler (pink) (see also o-s door panel picture) was then applied to shape and final shape achieved with cellulose putty (grey) to give #4 the wing duly widened and wheel safely inside it.

Fitting The Spare Wheel

Mounting the spare wheel on the boot lid suggested two problems to me. 1) the stress on the fibreglass lid and 2) opening the boot wide enough to get anything in and out as the wheel hit the rear skirt. In discussions with other JBA owners they have to remove the spare wheel to get the boot fully open.

Spare wheel, bracket, open
When the wheel is hinged away from the car the boot lid may be widely opened, and is supported by resting on the wheel.

Having already altered the wings I did not wish to mount the spare wheel in the wing, which some have done. To overcome this I made a bracket that is mounted on the bumper-mount bar.

This bracket hinges open and away from the boot lid. When shut it locates between two plates on the lid to stop any sideways motion, but the weight bears down onto the chassis.

Replacement petrol tanks made from stainless steel fit under the floor-pans on each side. This is approximately the same volume as the original tank and still not less than 6.5 inches ground clearance.
