Since the last page my tyres had arrived at
National Tyre Services and I had these fitted and onto the Falcon before I
continued with the bonnet panels.
The first part was to set up the
bonnet support panel, which I made out of Marine Ply. I used the Radiator surround as a template.
Robbie told me, just before
Christmas, that I was coming to the hardest part of the car. On looking at the panels I couldn't see anything
hard about them and thought he must be pulling my leg.
Cutting the Bonnet hinge for a
start, so that it clears the CBU and the bonnet support.
The same with the aluminium
panels, measuring them up, cutting the flanges so that they clear.
Positioning the Bonnet catches so
that they are just right. Filing the edges. All time consuming work. You seem to be doing a lot of
work and getting nowhere fast.
So I turned my attention to other parts
of the car, just to give myself a boost.
I fitted the rear lights to the
wings. Not wired up yet but easy to fit. Hillman Imp type from Tony Stafford.
The Rear Section.
I fitted the rear flange.
I was quite pleased with this and
could do a little work on the bonnet panels in between, without
becoming exasperated.
Then I fitted the rear bumpers.
This gave me the boost I
needed. It was another part of the car completed.
I fitted the front tray. This is
really oversize, as it is the same tray that fits the Tourer and
TSR. The only difference is that it butts up against the Radiator
Grill on the Sports.
It is a case of measuring the distance the panel
sticks out past the front of the car cut off the excess. Mark out
the outline of the Radiator shell onto the panel, then cut to
line.
On the Tourer & TSR this panel slides
underneath the Radiator Shell.
I now have the bonnet panels almost
finished. I used Stainless steel screws instead of pop rivets. Just a couple of minor things to attend to.
The JBA badge bar was fitted and the
front bumper.
I have fitted one headlamp so far.
The middle silencer box is a bit low. Something I will
have to attend to. Also I think my car is sitting a bit too low on the
rear.
Admiring Doug's work is Malcolm Jones on
the right of the picture and myself behind the camera. Doug is on the
left.
Well I was really amazed at the way Doug has
got on. He has passed most of the hard parts of the car. The inner
windscreen frame is a bit awkward. But as far as the rest goes, it is
downhill all the way.
Look back in March to see what Doug has been up to. He has got on a lot further than
I expected.
I am looking forward to seeing him again. Robbie.
