Fitting Engine Gearbox Propshaft

Now in 2010 we do not  have a JBA Factory producing any vehicle that has been evaluated in any articles in the various Kit Car Press magazines or approved by VOSA BIVA testing.

Please note these are the old build pages from 1999 to 2004 when we had a JBA Factory in full production from 1982 that was regularly featured in the Kit Car Press and complied with regulations including passing UK Vosa SVA/BIVA tests and TUV tests in the EU.
A 2004 JBA Engineering Ltd Sports SR kit has passed the new BIVA test in June 2009.

 Spanner Sizes
Spanner Sizes fits on the head of a bolt. 8mm spanner fits M5 bolt, 10mm......M6, 13mm......M8, 17mm......M10.

What You Will Need
Engine Mounts and mounting rubber from 1984 Sierra onwards or your special engine mounts if you are using an engine other than the Sierra and JBA have fitted the chassis to allow for your configuration.
The center part of the Sierra gearbox mounting plate.
Lifting Tackle.
Prop shaft and Sierra bolts to secure.

Re-New
Timing Belt/Timing Chain, Fanbelt. Clutch Kit comprising of clutch plate, pressure plate and thrust bearing, Plug leads and Plugs, all Water hoses Radiator/Heater and Thermostat.
Oil Filter and Fuel Filters.
Consider Engine Mounting Rubbers, Starter Motor, Alternator.

The photo above shows the correct engine mounting bracket for Sierra installation.

We are only concerned here with fitting the Ford Sierra engine and gearbox to the JBA chassis.

First separate the centre part from the gearbox mounting bracket and fit to the underside of the location points on the JBA chassis.

Then fit the Sierra rubber engine mounts onto the chassis and fit the Sierra mounting brackets to the engine. Here the five speed gearbox is already coupled up to the part built up engine.

You will need some means of lifting the engine, by block and tackle or by one of these cranes shown in the photo, they can be hired.
Locate and secure engine and gearbox to the chassis.

Tighten up all bolts properly and smear them with an anti seize compound such as Copperslip, available from motor factors.

Fit the exhaust manifold and down pipe. There are three different sizes of down pipes that have been fitted to the Ford Sierra. It is the short one you need.

The manifold and down pipe are usually positioned on the right hand side of Ford engines. The exception to this is some of the 1.8 litre Sierra engines CVH I think, as shown in this photo, where it exits from the left of the engine.

If you wish to use an engine other than the Sierra models or Rover V8 model contact JBA first.

The engines that have been fitted so far are all the Ford Cortina and Sierra engines, except 4x4 configurations, even the Ford 1.8 diesel, Fiat twin cam and Rover V8. JBA make a special chassis for the Rover V8.

You can fit your old donor wheels now in order to move the chassis around.
Finally fit your new filter and fill your engine with the recommended oil and change and top up gearbox oil.

Remember this plate has to fitted from underneath the JBA Chassis Brackets

DOHC engines have different gearbox mounting brackets with L shaped brackets check with the JBA factory for more information.

Trevor Smith's Guide

A new flange is supplied by JBA
The L shaped mounting brackets and the replacement flange in the end of the
gearbox.

To modify the gearbox to accept the new flange supplied by JBA you have to
remove the existing coupling.

1. Detach prop shaft rubber coupling from the vibration damper (3 nuts) then
remove the 3 studs securing the damper to the gearbox output flange.

2. Remove the ring in the centre of the output flange (this is a strange
castellated wheel and is very hard to undo; a 3/4" box spanner just fits in
there)

3. Draw the flange out on the spline. You can use the vibration damper as a
pulling tool by putting something metal between the shaft and the hole in
the damper then just tighten the studs)

4. Fit the flange supplied by JBA and refit the locking ring

5. Grind approx 1/4" - 3/8" off the end of the shaft to allow the prop shaft
flange to fit

Thanks Peter and Trevor.

Prop Shaft
The Prop shaft is easy to fit using the original nuts and bolts from the Sierra donor. If you have lost them during the strip down, obtain them from your Ford dealer.
I would just do a trial fit of the prop shaft at this stage, as you may have to remove it later in the build, to fit the handbrake and connect the cable and also to fit speedometer magnets, if using an electric speedometer.
JBA supply two types of prop shafts. One for standard installations and the other for DOHC injected models.
Prop shafts can also be made up and supplied by specialist dealers around the country.

Ford Zetec
Some owners have been thinking about using the Ford Zetec engine. The Factory has just started to fit these engines. A superb website about them can be found on the link below, it describes gearbox and bell housing set ups with this engine.

The next page deals the Exhaust system and fitting the Radiator.
