Steering Shaft  Pedal Assembly  Brake Pipe Connections

Now in 2010 we do not  have a JBA Factory producing any vehicle that has been evaluated in any articles in the various Kit Car Press magazines or approved by VOSA BIVA testing.

Please note these are the old build pages from 1999 to 2004 when we had a JBA Factory in full production from 1982 that was regularly featured in the Kit Car Press and complied with regulations including passing UK Vosa SVA/BIVA tests and TUV tests in the EU.
A 2004 JBA Engineering Ltd Sports SR kit has passed the new BIVA test in June 2009.

Spanner Sizes
Spanner Sizes fits on the head of a bolt. 8mm spanner fits M5 bolt, 10mm......M6, 13mm......M8, 17mm......M10.

What You Will Need
Silicon Sealer.
Fuel Breather Hose.
Brake and Clutch pedal rubbers.

Re-New
Ford brake pedal plastic bushes.
Ford plastic steering shaft bush.

Now the CBU is in place this is where the work begins. Follow the instructions in the build manual exactly.

This photo above shows the latest seat belt diagonal bracket mounting points on the TSR kit taken 26-06-2003 and shows the new bracket extending from the rear of the chassis and in through the CBU. The seat belt diagonal fits from this bracket to the seat belt upright in front of it.
You will notice it differs from the original mounting points in the photo below.

This photo is taken after re-assembly of painted kit.

Special Note
I do not know what arrangements are available for fitting the rear seat belt anchor points in the TSR. The rear three CBU mounting points are used and the bolts supplied by JBA are a non metric size to comply with seat belt regulations, but I do not know the details.

Fit the seat belt diagonals. They are painted black by JBA, but shown in grey here. These fit onto the outside edge of the seat belt uprights nearest CBU and the outside of the rear spring hanger brackets on the chassis or the new brackets as in previous photo. You will have to drill two 10mm holes through the brackets.
Drill a hole in the floor for the fuel tank breather pipe so that it can exit the car, the other part of the breather pipe should be positioned as high up as is possible. Seal all the holes if you are not going to do a complete strip down.
Doug has positioned the pipe here from the highest point in the boot and it will eventually curve upwards into the highest point inside the CBU (where the pipe ends in the photo above) and then down to a hole in the floor.

At the assembly stage I used all the nuts and bolts dry without any grease or copperslip added because I did not want any grease etc going on the kit as it was to be stripped down completely for painting.

Next modify the clutch pedal and fit the JBA brake pedal onto the pedal frame, renewing plastic bush. Shorten brake servo push rod and modify then fit these to the CBU as per manual.

Now modify the steering shaft as per manual and fit the assembly through the CBU using a new bush and alloy ring (available from your local Ford agent) where the steering comes through bulkhead. This bush if faulty or worn is one of the main causes of an MoT failure.
Then the steering column fits onto the brackets on the scuttle loop, using the bushes and bolts supplied in the kit. Now connect it up to the steering rack using the parts supplied in the kit.
The steering and brake pedal bushes are available from your Local Ford Dealer.

The steering rack bush that connects to the steering shaft is a Triumph Dolomite part number 157659 (supplied in Kit) available from JBA or your local Rover dealer.
Various members of older cars would like me to include a price for this part.
The price of this part is £43.15p. at September1999

Update Another supplier with mail order is listed below.
T.D. Fitchett Fitchett (Redland) Industrial Estate, Station Hill, Oakengates, Telford,
Shropshire,TF2 9JX England. Tel. 01952 619585 / 620434 Fax. 01952 610510.
Price from here is £30.00 plus VAT at 04-June-2003. Other Triumph suppliers can be found here.

The brake and clutch pedal rubbers found to be suitable are from earlier Rover Mini. Try Europa.

In the photo above Doug had to raise the alternator by about 3cm, to clear the steering shaft on the SOHC injected engine. The bracket Doug made is shown in the photograph and uses a spare tapped hole on the engine adjacent to the original three tapped holes as one of the originals cannot be used.

The Steering shaft parts may have to be altered for other engines fitted.

Next fit the hand brake bracket to the CBU and fit Sierra handbrake on to it.

It is advisable to fit a plate on the underside of the CBU to give added strength to the handbrake assembly.
Now couple up the handbrake cable and adjust. Do not re-connect the prop shaft at this stage if you are fitting an electric speedometer, as magnet sensors have to be fitted later.

Now it is back to the unfinished brake pipes on the chassis. Place a nipple on each of the three pipes double flare ends and bend pipes to fit onto the master cylinder.
SVA Note The fluid reservoir must be transparent, as fitted to Fords and able to show fluid level.

Brake Pipe Connections From the Servo Ford Sierra Right Hand Drive JBA Sports SR. JBA Falcon TSR.

1 The front pipe on the Servo nearest the radiator which sits underneath  facing down to the ground couples up to The Off Side / Drivers side Front Brake.

The middle pipe on the Servo which sits facing passenger side couples up to
The Near Side / Passenger side Front Brake.

3 The rear pipe on the Servo nearest the windscreen which sits facing passenger side couples up to
The Brake Balance Valve on Offside Chassis at the front of CBU.

The next page deals with fitting the boot to the CBU (Central Body Unit)
